Schmeckfest is Freeman's best-known annual festival and one of its biggest sources of community pride.

Founded in 1959 and held over two weekends every spring, this "festival of tasting" showcases the sites, sounds and flavors of the Germans from Russia traditions on which this community was established in 1874. From rope making and willow basket weaving to food samples and sales of sausage, cheese pockets, kuchen and other baked goods, the demonstrations offer something for everybody.

Schmeckfest's hallmark events are the traditional German meal served to 1,000 guests each of its four nights (pictured) and an evening musical that draws talent and crowds from across the region.

Many of the Schmeckfest activities are free; advanced tickets are required for both the meal and the musical.

Schmeckfest takes place in mid-spring, generally in the months of April and May.
